NEW PICTURE SENSATION
BACK OF A NUDE WOMAN
A small panel showing a watercolour painting
of the back of a nude woman, draped against a
picturesque Spanish shawl, is the sensation this
year of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours
Exhibition, which was opened yesterday at Piccadilly,
The artist, Wynne Apperley, is asking £1,050 for it, a
sum entirely out of proportion to the prices asked for
other pictures shown.
“The Spanish Venus”, as the picture is called,
has a blue background. It is in the tinting of the woman’s
skin and her graceful attitude that the artist has shown
his artistic execution.
Young and old, all the artists who went to the opening
of the exhibition yesterday paused in front of
“The Spanish Venus” to pay her homage and her artist
